Get the Idea Off Your Hard Drive.

I remember walking out of Office Max that day feeling powerful.  Armed with a tablet of poster-sized sticky chart paper and new broad tipped markers, I made my way through the parking lot on mission. I’d just spent a lot of money on a URL I was sure was gonna make me millions.

I don’t remember what was on the radio as I drove back to my place.  I was too busy making lists in my head.  I don’t remember unloading my car, or what I ate for lunch that day, but I DO remember the feeling of possibility as I crouched on the ground, scribbled my plans in diagrams and colors and stuck my ideas in sequential order on my dining room walls.Knock knock…

My neighbor.  Did I have baking soda.  Yes. Come in.She looked at my sticky poster papers strewn about my dining room walls and floors and asked what I was up to.

“Oh… just hatching plans.”

“About?”

“I’m creating an online course.”“Oh, like for the University?”

“No.  For me.  For people.”

“I don’t get it.” She thanked me for the baking soda and went back across the street while I plopped back down on my dining room floor staring at the walls.

I went blank. I kept thinking how my neighbor just didn’t get my idea.

That’s ok, I thought.  Just a little distraction. 

I’ll take a break and get back to it.

I don’t remember what I did next that day, or any of the days that followed. 

I do remember transferring my poster paper to the back of a door when dinner guests were about to come over. 

I do remember taking pictures of those posters behind the door before I finally threw them away.

I still have the URL.

And I still have not brought that course to life.

My neighbor, of course is not to blame, here.  She just came over for baking soda, for goodness sake.

No, it was my own persistence that wavered, my own doubts that took over my belief.

  3. The Perfectionist: I don’t have a clarity/I’m in the weeds/aka: analysis paralysis.  As Elizabeth Gilbert writes, “Perfectionism is fear dressed up in a mink coat and heels.”
